This past weekend we went to the Giraffe Center. It’s an educational and conservation center near Nairobi National Park. The center was born out of concern for the endangered Rothschild giraffe. The state of the Rothschild giraffe is better now than in 1979, when the center was started, but it is still endangered because of habitat loss.
You can learn more about the Giraffe Center from its website. If you’re in Nairobi, you should definitely visit. It’s probably the only chance you’ll have to get close enough to pet and feed a giraffe – and not in a place where the animal is closely confined. Tip: Go early to beat the crowds in the afternoon.
Here are some pictures from our visit there.
Here is a very short video of J. and I feeding the giraffes.
Also, I can’t leave out the turtles!
We had a great time. I’d like to go back on a sunnier day and also do the nature walk. I also wouldn’t mind going to the gift shop again – the souvenirs there are very reasonably priced.
